Tulsa, OK, Mayor G.T. Bynum was elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Civic League at its annual meeting in mid-November. The Board also elected Denver City Councilwoman Diana Romero Campbell as Vice Chair and the Mayor of Edinburg, TX, Ramiro Garza, as a new board member.
Bynum has served as the League’s Vice Chair for the past year and is in his last few days as mayor, having decided not to run for reelection this year. He succeeds Mayor Malik Evans of Rochester, NY, who has led the organization for the past year.
League accomplishments during Mayor Evans’ term include integration of the Center on Democracy Innovation and its work to improve and reform democracy into the League, addition of the staff from Civic Genius, together with their work on citizen assemblies and other deliberative forums, completion of a new Three-Year Strategic Plan, addition of five new board members, and oversight of three national convenings.
The League’s new strategic plan alters our mission and vision slightly to incorporate our work on democracy reform and innovation.
- The mission of the National Civic League is to advance inclusive civic engagement and promote innovations in democracy to make decision-making more participatory, equitable, and effective.
- The League envisions a nation with a healthy democracy, built on equitable, engaged, thriving communities.
Departing the board after nine years of service, which is our limit, are Valerie Lemmie, Director of Exploratory Research at the Charles F. Kettering Foundation and Angela Romans, Executive Director of Innovation for Equity. Lemmie served as board chair for two years and Romans as Vice Chair. The full board, which consists of 25 members, will meet again next March in Washington, D.C.
