Project Initiator: Community members
The Cordova Community Council is a citizen-based 501(c)(3) organization that has offices in the Rancho Cordova City Hall and receives much of its funding from the city. The Council was founded in 1959 as a collaboration of several community organizations, and essentially operates as the city’s community affairs arm.
The Cordova Community Council works with the city and chamber of commerce to build a greater sense of community and harness the power of volunteers, including young people. A city of 70,000+ residents, Rancho Cordova was designated an All-America City in 2010, something which the Community Council helped bring about.
The Community Council sponsors a variety of community events in Rancho Cordova throughout the year, including holiday celebrations and parades, an annual Community Volunteer Awards event, an annual Kids Day in the Park and the Rancho Cordova Fest, which celebrates the different cultures represented in the city. The Council also holds community meetings on occasion regarding issues facing the community and sponsors the Mayor’s State of the City address, an evening event that typically draws over 300 people.
Community Council members also volunteer in a variety of capacities, from working on city committees and neighborhood beautification efforts to cleaning debris from storm gutters. Council members worked for several years to raise money and convince the city to save an historic building as the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center, which opens in 2018.
