Recent natural disasters highlight the importance of people knowing their neighbors and being engaged in their community. FEMA Director, Brock Long, said recently that ” individual residents are the real first responders,” saying that government needs to better train residents in life-saving skills and “empower them to be a part of that response.” And please remember that those who are usually affected most are often those who are left out of civic affairs. Kudos to Charlottesville, VA, Mayor Mike Signer for standing up to the white nationalist marchers that invaded his town this week, calling the rally a “cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance.” Charlottesville, which was named an All-America City in 1978, has taken many steps over the years to engage its residents in more peaceful ways, including some great civic tech strategies.
