Description of Job
This position will support League operations by supporting communication and marketing efforts, conducting research, producing written materials, aiding at meetings and conferences, collaborating with stakeholders, and related activities. The program assistant will support multiple League programs, with particular emphasis on communications and research to promote our democracy work. Communications work will include posting on social media platforms, curating content for our monthly newsletter and quarterly journal, and organizing meetings and webinars. Research and data entry/analysis work will be primarily focused on governmental systems, civic engagement, democratic principles, equity, youth involvement in civic affairs and public problem-solving. Some of the activities to be supported include our annual All-America City Award program, National Conference on Citizenship, National Civic Review quarterly journal, monthly e-newsletter, website, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts, with this support to include scheduling appointments, tracking responses, managing logistics of trainings and events, and drafting correspondence. Much of the research and logistical work will be for the newly launched Center on Democracy Innovation.
This is an exempt, at-will, position with full benefits and a performance-based pay plan. Benefits include 20 paid-time-off days during the first two years, 12 paid holidays, fully covered health insurance for the employee only, life insurance, a 403(b) savings plan with a percent match in employer contributions, partial reimbursements for internet and cellphone, and disability insurance.
This position will report to the Director of our Washington, D.C. office, though some assignments will be provided by other League managers. While the position is designed to be largely remote, the hire will need to attend weekly in-person check-in meetings in Washington, DC, and 2-4 in-person meetings/year with other staff elsewhere around the U.S.
Pay Range: $55,000-$70,000
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Communications or Marketing, Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy, Pre-Law, Sociology, or other field of study related to the work assignment; AND
At least one year of responsible professional experience in a nonprofit or government agency performing similar work. This experience may include internships.
The following supplemental experience, competencies and abilities are highly desirable for this position and will be considered in selecting the successful candidate:
- Proven expertise in communications and/or policy research;
- Understanding and experience with social media and communication platforms such as Hootsuite, Constant Contact, WordPress, Salesforce, and Adobe Creative Cloud;
- Outstanding skills and abilities in verbal and written communications; ability to adapt a style to fit audiences of varying technical levels, and at various levels within an organization, in large groups and individual settings;
- Ability to work well with colleagues and outside interests regardless of position and authority;
- Excellent skills in project management, including establishing goals and timetables, tactical plans, monitoring progress and reporting out;
- Ability and motivation to develop creative solutions to complex, interpersonal, process, and systemic challenges;
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills; makes decisions in accordance with upper management's philosophy, values and goals; perceives items and issues that are of great importance and initiates action proactively and within appropriate boundaries;
- Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data and information, and to identify the impact information may have on seemingly unrelated areas; and
- Ability to adapt work behavior and methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Conditions of Employment
This is an at-will position, with a three-month probationary period and annual performance evaluations. The successful candidate in this position will be willing to travel up to 10% of the work time throughout the U.S. and be willing and able to perform work in excess of 40 hours per week as work dictates.
