Public Input Matters: Hearing Every Voice in a Growing Community
As one of the fastest-growing communities in South Carolina, Mount Pleasant faced a familiar but difficult challenge: how do you meaningfully engage residents in shaping the future of a rapidly changing community? Rather than relying on traditional town hall meetings where staff speak from podiums to attending citizens, Mount Pleasant launched Public Input Matters, a community-driven initiative designed from the ground up to meet residents where they live.
Over seven months, the Town of Mount Pleasant held seven in-person district meetings, each tailored to the unique character and priorities of that area of the community. Meetings were held after work hours in accessible locations like the library, town facilities, and the local water company. Cross departmental teams created an interactive experience that encouraged direct conversations across a broad range of topics from housing and transportation to tree canopy, stormwater, and public safety. Through district-based meetings, interactive discussions, and multiple avenues for feedback, residents helped shape priorities that would directly inform the town’s future planning efforts.
What emerged was more than input, it was a shared community voice. Residents across all seven districts identified transportation safety as a top concern, prompting the town to successfully pursue a Safe Streets for All federal grant and expand Mount Pleasant Way, a town-wide multimodal path.
Tree canopy preservation emerged as a near-universal priority, leading to the creation of a Tree Task Force and the launch of the Take Root program, which distributes free trees to residents at community events.
Housing affordability, particularly for younger and older residents, was elevated as a key priority in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan as a direct result of community input.
The legacy of Public Input Matters continues to grow. Building on its success, the town launched Planning Pop-Ups, informal, flexible engagement events held in the places residents already gather, from the Senior Center to the local Farmers Market, ensuring that community-driven dialogue remains an ongoing part of life in Mount Pleasant.
Mount Pleasant has demonstrated that meaningful engagement extends beyond gathering feedback. Resident voices informed priorities, guided planning efforts, strengthened decision making, and helped shape lasting investments that continue improving quality of life across the community. In Mount Pleasant, public input truly matters.
Mount Pleasant is the ninth Hall of Fame Award Inductee. The National Civic League created the All-America City Hall of Fame Award in 2019 to celebrate the ongoing work of past All-America Cities.
