Bring United Against Hate Week to Your Community This Fall

United Against Hate Week October 19 – 25, 2025
A Week to Counter Hate & Promote Safety and Belonging for All Residents

United Against Hate Week (UAH Week) is a call for local civic action to address the hate and bias that can tear at the fabric of community life.  Every year, city leaders, diverse community organizations, residents, schools, local businesses, and faith groups display posters and convene events that raise awareness about the harm of hate, build community relationships, and affirm shared values of belonging and safety for everyone.

UAH Week emerged from a poster campaign in 2017 led by city leaders in Bay Area communities who wanted to provide a safe and visible way for residents to respond to the hate groups marching in their cities in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, VA. Not In Our Town, a nationally recognized anti-hate organization, convened leaders from thirteen cities who displayed the posters, to ask what they wanted to do next. United Against Hate Week was launched in 2018 and has spread to over 240 communities across the country.

For civic leaders, UAH Week is an opportunity to:

  • Convene diverse residents to affirm a shared sense of community.
  • Raise awareness about the harm of hate to all residents.
  • Build trust and relationships between city leaders and communities experiencing hate.
  • Share response and prevention resources, including hate crime reporting protocols, services, and support for victims and young people experiencing hate, bias, and bullying.
  • Strengthen core civic values of safety and belonging.

Unique Resources Fuel Locally Driven Events

Cities and schools organize activities that meet the needs of their communities. UAH resources make it easy to plan and participate, including:

UAH Week 2024 a activities included block parties, unity walks, transit billboards, community art projects, bystander intervention trainings, high school game nights, film screenings, and more!

Films That Spark Engagement

Not In Our Town (NIOT) PBS films document real-life community responses to hate. The stories model solidarity and empower viewers to take positive action in their own towns. For thirty years, NIOT has collaborated with public television stations, national civic and faith groups, and communities to share films and supplemental materials as tools to help surface local issues, build connections between different groups, and inspire community-wide responses to hate and bias incidents.

Screening events that convene elected officials, diverse residents, community organizations, faith groups, youth, and law enforcement reinforce a shared sense of responsibility to respond to hate and bias and create shared ideas about what can be done. The UAH Week Film Guide showcases available NIOT films and provides ideas for engaging audiences. Supplemental resources help organizers lead discussions.

Six Ways Cities Can Participate in UAH Week

  1. Display and distribute UAH posters. Partner with libraries, fire stations, and other venues to distribute free posters. Print posters from the campaign website or email UAH to request a poster for your city.
  2. Spread the word. Share the UAH Week Info Sheet and Community & School Action Kits with city leaders, school districts, and community partners.
  3. Make a unified statement against hate. Ask city council members or the board of education to pass a resolution or proclamation acknowledging participation in UAH Week. Get inspiration from these statements:
  4. Join the UAH Week Video Campaign! Last year, Redwood City and North Fair Oaks, CA came together to create this video:
  5. Present a screening of a Not In Our Town film. The UAH Week Film Guide features films and ideas for engaging audiences. Viewer guides help organizers lead discussions about how to address issues in your community.
  6. Host a Bystander Intervention Training or Community Hate Crime Education session. Collaborate with community partners and law enforcement to share reporting protocols and information about services available for victims. Consider partnering with Right To Be to present a training.
