Spread The Vote (STV) was founded with a simple but ambitious goal: to get identification and other vital documents for everyone who needs them to vote. Hitting the ground running in 2017, we organized volunteer chapters in multiple states, built partnerships with trusted community institutions, and cultivated meaningful relationships with our clients, helping many vote for the first time. We soon learned, however, that people need more than IDs to participate meaningfully in our democracy. They need trustworthy and nonpartisan information in order to understand their ballots, and they need concrete support to overcome administrative barriers and actually cast those ballots.
Our commitment to our clients led us to create our flagship civic education and voter access programs. With Encyclopedia Politica, STV is building the first-ever interactive guide to every elected office in America – a foundational civic education resource for voters, students, journalists, organizers, first-time candidates, and everyday people who want to learn more about their governments. Vote by Mail in Jail helps eligible incarcerated voters request and cast absentee ballots by coordinating directly with facilities and providing materials customized to incarcerated voters’ needs. Read the F*ing Directions addresses a critical information gap by breaking down the vote-by-mail process step by step in every state, demystifying the dozens of rule changes that have been made since absentee voting increased in popularity during the pandemic.
By joining forces with the National Civic League, STV becomes part of one of the most trusted and long-standing democracy organizations in the country, strengthening these programs with a national infrastructure built for long-term impact. Together, we are positioned to engage more Americans in the democratic process, turning first-time voters into consistently engaged citizens and community members.
